Apple faces mounting production costs due to surge in AI-driven memory chip prices
Apple shares fell by 4%, negatively impacting the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices, following financial results reported by new CEO John Ternus. The company revealed that the global boom in artificial intelligence and the rapid expansion of AI data centers have caused an unprecedented surge in memory chip costs. This shortage, referred to as "RAMageddon," has severely impacted Apple’s supply chain efficiency.
The company reported that its gross profit margin for the quarter ending in September dropped to 47.9%, even when accounting for tax refund benefits. CEO John Ternus warned that memory chip prices are expected to rise even further in the fourth quarter. To mitigate these increased expenses, Apple had previously implemented price hikes for iPads and MacBooks in June, followed by adjustments to iPhone pricing in September.
While Apple has historically managed its supply chain with high efficiency, these developments indicate that even the largest firms are struggling with rising raw material costs. The company is currently navigating these market pressures as it balances consumer pricing against the need to protect profit margins amidst the intense global demand for AI-related hardware.
