Cyprus health authorities address unauthorized medical procedures
On November 4, 2026, Cyprus Minister of Health Neofytos Charalambidis announced the completion of a mapping process to identify medical centers performing high-risk invasive procedures without proper authorization. Speaking after a Council of Ministers meeting, the Minister clarified that these facilities are distinct from licensed private hospitals, which are subject to regular state oversight. The investigation into these unauthorized services was prompted by reports of patients suffering severe complications, such as thrombosis and sepsis, after undergoing procedures like plasmapheresis at unregulated locations.
Minister Charalambidis stated that the ministry is currently evaluating these centers and taking appropriate measures, noting that one specific facility has already been reported to the police. While authorized private clinics operate under a registry overseen by the Superintendent of Private Hospitals, the centers currently under investigation had been operating outside this regulatory framework. The Ministry of Health emphasized that high-risk invasive treatments must only be performed in licensed medical facilities to ensure patient safety. Further evaluations are ongoing, and the authorities intend to pursue necessary actions against any entities found to be operating in violation of health regulations.
