Cyprus Ministry of Health investigates unauthorized invasive medical procedures
On November 4, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambidis, announced the completion of a mapping process targeting medical centers that perform high-risk invasive procedures outside of authorized hospital settings. This initiative follows reports of improper medical practices, including a specific case of a patient who suffered thrombosis and sepsis after receiving plasmapheresis in Larnaca.
Minister Charalambidis clarified that while all licensed private hospitals are registered and strictly supervised by the Ministry, the current investigation focuses on entities operating outside this regulatory framework. The Ministry has identified several such facilities through advertisements, internal investigations, and public complaints. These centers were allegedly offering invasive services that, according to official standards, should only be performed in fully equipped, licensed hospitals to ensure patient safety.
While the authorities are currently evaluating these services to determine appropriate regulatory responses, only one center has been formally reported to the police thus far. The evaluation process is ongoing, with officials confirming that specific, proportionate measures will be taken against centers found to be in violation of health and safety protocols.
