Cypriot parliamentary committee scrutinizes controversial asphalt plant relocation to Mitsero
The Cypriot parliamentary Committee on Environment held a session on November 4, 2026, to discuss the planned relocation of an asphalt plant from Dhali to the Mitsero area. Representatives from 12 affected local communities attended the meeting, expressing strong opposition to the industrial project. The committee highlighted concerns regarding the potential impact on public health and the environment, noting that the region is already burdened by existing industrial sites such as quarries and livestock farms.
University of Cyprus Rector Marina Neophytou, acting as a coordinator for the university’s advisory group, participated in the session and raised critical questions regarding the reliability of the original environmental study. Disy MP Michalis Kounounis argued that authorities failed to assess the cumulative environmental impact of the site. Furthermore, local residents cited warnings from medical associations regarding the health risks of burning fuel oil near residential areas. The facility is also located near a protected Natura 2000 area. Parliamentary officials suggested that a political decision could potentially alter the site selection. The affected communities are currently awaiting a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides to further address these concerns.
