Parliamentary committee discusses relocation of asphalt plant to Mitsero
On November 4, 2026, the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment held a session to address the controversial relocation of an asphalt plant to the Mitsero area. Representatives from 12 affected communities, including Mitsero, Kato Moni, Agrokipia, and Klirou, attended the hearing to express concerns regarding public health and environmental risks. The discussion followed formal complaints alleging that the project proceeded without sufficient public consultation and relied on incomplete or unreliable environmental studies.
During the session, University of Cyprus Rector Marina Neophytou, acting as coordinator of the university's advisory group, presented findings that further questioned the project's approval process. Experts and local residents highlighted that the Mitsero region is already heavily burdened by industrial activities, including quarries and slaughterhouses. They cited warnings from the Cyprus Oncology Society and the Cyprus Cardiology Society regarding the health hazards of burning fuel oil near residential areas. The committee also referenced a previous report by the Commissioner for Administration regarding past operational issues in the Tseri and Dali regions.
The communities are currently awaiting a meeting with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, to discuss the matter further. Legislators have expressed significant concern regarding the cumulative impact of industrial installations on local quality of life.
