Captain rescues dolphin trapped in fishing gear near Rhodes
On November 4, 2026, a maritime rescue took place near the island of Alimia, close to Rhodes, where a captain from Veria, Aris Martakis, freed a juvenile dolphin trapped in discarded fishing lines and equipment. While navigating the area, Martakis noticed two small dolphins persistently circling a specific spot, which drew his attention and led him to investigate the unusual behavior.
Upon approaching, the captain discovered that one of the dolphins was severely entangled in fishing gear and unable to swim freely. Despite the potential risk associated with handling a distressed wild animal, Martakis managed to carefully approach the creature and cut the lines, successfully releasing the animal back into the sea. The entire event was documented by the captain and his crew.
This incident highlights the ongoing environmental challenge of abandoned or lost fishing gear, commonly known as ghost gear, which poses a significant threat to marine life in the Mediterranean. No further official investigation or follow-up actions were reported, as the animal was successfully freed at the scene.
