Diplomatic activity intensifies ahead of Cyprus trilateral meeting
A flurry of diplomatic activity is underway in Cyprus ahead of a critical trilateral meeting scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026. UN Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín is mediating negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides to secure a package of confidence-building measures (CBMs). This package reportedly includes the opening of four new crossing points—specifically Mia Milia, Athienou-Pyroi-Aglantzia, Louroujina-Lympia, and Kampos-Karavostasi—alongside extensive demining operations across the island.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived in the occupied north on Friday for a working visit to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, as well as Ünal Üstel and Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu. While Ankara continues to advocate for a 'two-state' solution, there is speculation that the discussions may clear the way for a 5+1 multilateral conference. Both sides appear close to an agreement on the crossing points, though differences remain regarding the scope of demining. President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism about potential announcements over the weekend. If successful, these developments could pave the way for a resumption of formal peace talks before the term of UN Secretary-General António Guterres concludes at the end of the year.
