Diplomatic efforts intensify ahead of Cyprus tripartite meeting
Diplomatic activity surrounding the Cyprus issue has reached a critical stage ahead of a scheduled tripartite meeting on November 9, 2026. The UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, will host Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman at the UN mission chief's residence in the protected buffer zone at 11:00 a.m. to discuss the potential resumption of negotiations.
President Christodoulides expressed cautious optimism following a phone conversation with Holguin, noting that the process is in a phase of awaiting final responses and suggesting that concrete announcements could emerge over the weekend. Government officials have highlighted progress regarding confidence-building measures, specifically regarding crossing points. Meanwhile, controversy surrounds a visit by UN envoy Holguin to the Turkish embassy in the north, which some local sources criticize as a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 550, which condemns secessionist actions in Cyprus.
Simultaneously, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to visit the occupied north on Friday to coordinate with the Turkish Cypriot leadership, as Ankara maintains its position advocating for a two-state solution. The government continues to monitor these developments while expressing hope that the ongoing UN-led initiatives will eventually lead to successful diplomatic outcomes.
