Diplomatic efforts to restart Cyprus peace talks intensify
Diplomatic efforts regarding the Cyprus issue have entered a critical phase as personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin, works to facilitate a potential five-party conference. Following recent emergency meetings with both President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, Holguin has expressed cautious optimism. The process follows a controversial visit by the envoy to the Turkish embassy in the occupied areas to receive a message from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which drew criticism regarding UN Resolution 550.
President Christodoulides has confirmed that he is optimistic, citing positive messages received through his communication with Holguin. While the President declined to comment on the specific role of Turkey, he stated that the ultimate goal is to hold an expanded conference that would allow for the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were previously interrupted.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to visit the occupied areas for discussions with the Turkish Cypriot leadership. While expectations for a shift in the two-state solution narrative remain low, the visit is viewed as a significant move by Ankara to clarify its position before the UN window for progress expires.
