Europol acting director presents key priorities to European Parliament
On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Jurgen Ebner, the acting Executive Director of Europol and Deputy Executive Director of the Governance Directorate, presented his strategic priorities to the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) in Brussels. His key objectives for the agency include enhancing information exchange, providing robust operational support, conducting financial investigations, and improving the agency's overall technological readiness.
Europol is currently in a transitional phase following the conclusion of former Executive Director Catherine De Bolle’s term on May 1. Following a selection process conducted by the agency's management board, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Council selected Ebner for the leadership role. LIBE Committee Chair Javier Zarzalejos confirmed that the committee will issue a non-binding opinion regarding the appointment. This process takes place as discussions continue on a new structural framework for Europol and a significant expansion of its official duties and mandate.
Ebner, who brings over 41 years of experience in the German federal service to the role, is currently awaiting the formal advisory stage of the appointment process. The committee's feedback will be a critical step before the final confirmation of his tenure as the agency prepares to adapt to new legislative requirements.
