Specialist doctors in Cyprus can now register patients as bedridden for home care
The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) of Cyprus has officially expanded the authority to register beneficiaries as "bedridden" within the General Healthcare System (Gesy) IT system. Previously, this registration was exclusively the responsibility of personal doctors, but under the updated regulations, specialist doctors are now permitted to perform this assessment.
This classification is intended for individuals with serious health conditions that prevent them from traveling and necessitate receiving nursing services at home. Eligibility for home nursing care covers patients with chronic issues, those requiring specialized procedures such as catheter management or stoma care, and individuals undergoing dialysis. To access these services, a patient must meet strict clinical criteria and possess a valid referral from a treating physician.
The HIO emphasizes that the registration must accurately reflect the actual clinical status of the patient to ensure appropriate care. These services, often provided by the community nursing teams of the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY), aim to provide critical medical support to individuals with limited mobility, ensuring they receive necessary nursing interventions without the requirement of hospital admission.
