Cyprus ranked second-to-last globally for youth academy integration in football
A new report from the CIES Football Observatory, published in early November 2026, reveals that the Cypriot football league ranks 49th out of 50 evaluated leagues worldwide regarding the inclusion of academy-trained players. The study shows that only 3.9% of playing minutes in the Cypriot first division are attributed to players developed by their respective clubs, placing Cyprus just above Turkey in the global standings.
Context provided by the reports highlights a significant disparity between the league's high UEFA ranking and the development of local talent. While the national league has improved its standing in international club competitions, approximately 80% of players currently competing in Cyprus have been trained abroad. Within the local context, AEL Limassol stands out as the highest-performing team, with its academy graduates accounting for 12.2% of its total playing minutes.
Critics and analysts suggest that this reliance on foreign-trained players is a primary factor contributing to the struggles of the Cypriot national team. Despite the progress made at the club level, the minimal integration of academy products remains a point of concern for the future of local football development.
