Anti-Corruption Authority clears ten officials of misconduct allegations
The Independent Anti-Corruption Authority of Cyprus officially concluded its investigation on November 5, 2026, finding no evidence of wrongdoing regarding a high-profile complaint filed by retired National Guard Lieutenant General Andreas Zonias. The investigation focused on allegations against ten individuals, including high-ranking government officials and civil servants, among whom was Savvas Angelides. The Authority reached a unanimous decision that there was no documentation or basis for any criminal act of corruption.
The allegations, originally submitted in the spring of 2023, involved serious claims of forgery, the distribution of forged documents, abuse of power, and improper influence. In addition to the review by the Anti-Corruption Authority, some of these accusations had previously been brought to the attention of the Police Criminal Investigation Department. The inquiry involved a thorough evaluation of all gathered evidence, testimonies, and the decisions made by relevant councils.
With the announcement of this unanimous finding, the Authority has effectively closed the case. The decision clears all ten accused parties of any misconduct, bringing an end to the long-standing investigation that had been active since the complaint was lodged three years ago.
