Major drug trafficking network dismantled in Cyprus
Cypriot law enforcement authorities have launched operation "Plegma" to dismantle a major drug trafficking network linked to a February 2026 seizure of 233.5 kilograms of narcotics in Strovolos. The investigation, led by the Organized Crime Investigation Department, resulted in numerous arrests, including current and former prison inmates. Authorities identified a "storekeeper" who managed drug stocks and financial transactions at his family home, and his mobile communication data led police to four additional key suspects, who were remanded in custody for five days. A total of five defendants are currently facing 30 charges in the Nicosia Criminal Court, including conspiracy to commit a felony, participation in a criminal organization, money laundering, and drug possession with intent to supply.
Financial investigations are ongoing, with authorities freezing approximately 350,000 euros in assets discovered in suspects' accounts. In addition to the drug-related charges, one suspect of Turkish descent was apprehended in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors are considering consolidating the case into a single indictment involving additional suspects identified during the operation. Further investigations are underway to identify the leaders of the network, as authorities continue to uncover evidence linking current prison detainees to the orchestration of widespread drug distribution activities.
