Cyprus reports increased blood reserves and confirms security of national systems
On Thursday, November 5, 2026, Maria Adamou, head of hospital blood banks in Cyprus, announced a significant improvement in the nation's blood reserves. Reporting to the Cyprus News Agency (KYPE), Adamou confirmed that the national blood supply provided by the Blood Center has increased, allowing for better responsiveness to medical emergencies across the country.
Adamou also addressed concerns regarding infrastructure security, explicitly ruling out the possibility of a cyberattack against Cypriot blood banks. These reassurances follow recent reports of similar cyberattacks targeting blood donation infrastructure in France. While acknowledging that medical needs remain high, she highlighted the significance of the recently approved national strategy for blood, which aims to modernize and upgrade the blood donation management system.
The implementation of this new national strategy is expected to ensure long-term stability in the supply and safety of blood reserves. It focuses on the rational use of blood products and the improvement of planning, management, and distribution, ultimately strengthening the resilience of the healthcare system against future shortages.
