Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eizenkot moves toward premiership with support from Arab parties
On November 5, 2026, the Arab Joint List alliance announced its decision to recommend opposition leader Gadi Eizenkot, head of the Yashar party, to President Isaac Herzog for the mandate to form Israel's next government. This move, driven by a desire to prevent Benjamin Netanyahu from returning to power, provides Eizenkot with the support of 67 out of 120 Knesset members. Along with the Joint List, the Ra'am party has also signaled its support, giving Eizenkot a mathematical majority in recommendations.
Despite this parliamentary support, Eizenkot faces significant challenges in forming a stable government. While his bloc holds a majority, several supporting factions refuse to participate directly in a coalition. Furthermore, other opposition figures, including Yair Golan, Naftali Bennett, and Avigdor Lieberman, hold conflicting views on whether to include Arab parties or form a minority government. The United Torah Judaism party has opted not to endorse any candidate. President Herzog confirmed he would issue a formal mandate on Sunday following further consultations to assess the viability of a new administration.
