Akamas development project phase one approved with reduced environmental footprint
Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Christos Senekis, announced the approval of modified construction plans for the first phase of the Akamas peninsula project. Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Audit, Senekis confirmed that the tender process is scheduled to begin in 2026, with construction work slated to commence in early 2027 and a target completion date of February 2028.
The revised project plans follow a government decision to further minimize the environmental footprint in the protected area. As a consequence of these adjustments, the number of service nodes has been reduced from 14 to 8. Minister Senekis emphasized that these changes do not invalidate previous environmental assessments but reflect a strategic government decision to incorporate expert recommendations for enhanced environmental protection.
The project update comes after the Parliamentary Committee on Audit reviewed a special report from the Audit Office regarding the Akamas region. The government maintains that this procedural evolution ensures the long-term sustainability of the area while fulfilling the commitment to proceed with the management plans under the newly established criteria.
