NATO launches digital platform to expedite drone defense procurement
On November 5, 2026, NATO announced the launch of a new digital procurement platform designed to help its 32 member states acquire proven anti-drone equipment more efficiently. Claudio Palestini, head of Innovation and Technology Adoption at NATO, described the service as an e-commerce-style platform where nations can purchase or lease defense technology following a multi-month competitive evaluation process.
The selected inventory includes advanced solutions such as electronic jamming systems and interceptor drones, developed by manufacturers in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States. Individual equipment packages can cost up to 28 million dollars. This initiative aims to protect national borders and critical infrastructure from unauthorized aerial incursions, which have become a significant concern for the alliance in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The development serves as a direct response to rising anxieties regarding airspace violations, particularly in the Baltic states, Romania, and Poland. By streamlining the acquisition process, NATO seeks to bolster collective security against the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems, ensuring that member states have access to cost-effective, battle-tested defensive capabilities.
