On Friday, November 6, 2026, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, was proclaimed an honorary doctor of the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki. The ceremony, held at 19:00, was attended by high-ranking officials from the Greek government and parliament to honor the president's contributions to the field of international relations and to highlight the historical ties between Greece and Cyprus.
Prior to the academic ceremony, President Christodoulides attended a commemorative event organized by the Society of Macedonian Studies. There, he unveiled a wall plaque dedicated to Cypriots who fought for the liberation of Macedonia and Thessaloniki, as well as to Macedonians who sacrificed their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus during the 1974 conflict.
In his keynote address, Christodoulides reiterated his vision for a sovereign, reunited Cyprus free of foreign military presence and intervention rights. He emphasized that the state must remain a pillar of regional stability, focusing on institutional reforms, economic strength, and upgrading its international status to exert pressure on Ankara regarding the status quo on the island.
