Diplomatic efforts intensify ahead of Cyprus trilateral meeting
Diplomatic activity regarding the Cyprus issue has reached a critical stage ahead of a trilateral meeting scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026. President Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, and UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin are set to meet at the UN mission residence to discuss the potential resumption of direct negotiations. Discussions currently focus on methodology, substance, and specific confidence-building measures (CBMs), including a UN-backed proposal to open four new crossing points and initiate large-scale demining.
The proposed locations for new crossing points include Mia Milia, the Louroujina–Lymbia area, and the Athienou–Pyroi–Aglantzia route. The Greek Cypriot side has reportedly proposed a fourth connection between Kambos and Karavostasi as an alternative to Kokkina to bypass historically contentious issues. While President Christodoulides has expressed a positive stance toward the UN package, the visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to the occupied north has been labeled "illegal and deplorable" by the Greek Cypriot government. Officials indicate that potential announcements regarding these measures could be made over the weekend, as international efforts seek to move beyond the current deadlock before the tenure of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concludes.
