Tylliria local authorities protest potential abandonment of Kokkina crossing opening
On November 6, 2026, the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous and the Tylliria Community Complex expressed strong opposition to reports suggesting that the long-promised opening of the Kokkina crossing may be abandoned. Local authorities, led by Nikos Kleanthous, have warned of potential dynamic protest measures if the government proceeds with an alternative plan to open a crossing in the Kampos area instead.
Local leaders state that President Nikos Christodoulides had previously given both public and private commitments that he would not consent to the opening of any new crossing points unless the Kokkina gate was opened first. The authorities emphasize that the Kokkina crossing is vital for regional development, social cohesion, and ending the geographic isolation of the Tylliria region. They firmly reject any agreement that involves bypassing or replacing the Kokkina opening with other arrangements, describing such a shift as a direct retreat from the President’s earlier assurances.
The authorities have confirmed they are in contact with local stakeholders to coordinate a collective response. As of now, the situation remains tense as the local communities await official clarification, having made it clear that their patience regarding the issue has reached its limit.
