The Metropolitan Museum of Art announces the 2027 Met Gala theme
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has officially announced the theme for the 2027 Met Gala: "extraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday." The exhibition will explore the relationship between high fashion and everyday clothing, featuring 200 to 230 pieces that elevate common items like jeans, white T-shirts, and puffer jackets. Notable exhibits will include Brooke Shields' iconic Calvin Klein jeans, pieces from Marc Jacobs' grunge collection for Perry Ellis, and Matthieu Blazy's leather jeans for Bottega Veneta.
This announcement arrives two months after the museum cancelled a planned exhibition dedicated to John Galliano, following significant public backlash regarding the designer's history of antisemitic comments. The controversy had raised questions about the curatorial influence of Anna Wintour, who maintains close ties with Galliano. By shifting the focus to everyday materials, organizers aim to stabilize the planning process and refocus the event, which remains one of the most anticipated nights in the global fashion calendar.
