Health minister addresses parliament regarding the budget and viability of state health services
On November 6, 2026, during a session of the parliamentary Finance Committee, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides presented the Ministry of Health's 2027 budget, totaling €1.49 billion. This represents a 3.3% increase compared to 2026, with state contributions to the General Health System (Gesy) rising by €38 million to reach €908 million.
Addressing concerns about the financial status of the State Health Services Organization (Okypy), Minister Charalambides assured that the organization is not at risk of bankruptcy. He confirmed that Okypy currently holds approximately €300 million in financial reserves, which allows it to operate even with deficits. However, he emphasized that the government's long-term goal is to balance revenue and expenditure. Government financial support for public hospital autonomy is set to conclude at the end of 2026 without any currently planned extensions.
To ensure future sustainability, a study by PwC is expected to be completed soon, outlining necessary measures to optimize Okypy's finances. Additionally, a specialized team of economists is evaluating methods to increase revenues and reduce costs. The discussion also highlighted the broader need for a comprehensive assessment of the Gesy system seven years after its implementation, focusing on service quality, efficiency, and personnel requirements.
