Health minister presents 2027 budget and addresses public hospital sustainability
Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides presented the 2027 Ministry of Health budget of €1.492 billion to the parliamentary Finance Committee, marking a 3.3% increase compared to 2026. A significant portion of the budget, €908 million, is allocated to the state's contribution to the General Healthcare System (GeSY), reflecting a €38 million increase. The session highlighted the need for a comprehensive evaluation of GeSY seven years after its implementation, focusing on quality, efficiency, and long-term viability, while addressing concerns regarding staffing shortages and systemic overuse.
Regarding the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY), the minister confirmed that state financial support will conclude at the end of 2026 without plans for extension. Although OKYpY faces ongoing deficits, Charalambides assured that the organization remains solvent with current cash reserves of approximately €300 million. To ensure future viability, the government has commissioned a study by PwC to identify necessary measures for increasing revenue and reducing expenditures. Additionally, a special team of economists is evaluating the financial autonomy of public hospitals to transition the organization toward a balanced budget, while efforts to bolster the healthcare workforce include a new €1.5 million scholarship scheme for nursing students.
