Health Minister says OKYPY state health organization is not at risk of bankruptcy
During the discussion of the 2027 health budget at the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Minister of Health Neofytos Charalampidis stated that the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY) is not at risk of bankruptcy. He clarified that the organization currently holds cash reserves of approximately €300 million, which allows it to maintain operations even if it reports deficits for several years. However, the minister emphasized that achieving a balanced budget remains the primary objective for the government.
The state funding supporting the autonomy of public hospitals is set to conclude at the end of 2026, with no current plans for further extension. Minister Charalampidis noted that a €100 million agreement between the Ministry of Health and OKYPY is currently under review by the Law Office. Furthermore, there is an ongoing dispute between OKYPY and the Health Insurance Organization regarding compensation for services provided by state hospitals.
To ensure future financial viability, an expert team of economists is currently analyzing the organization's data. Additionally, a comprehensive study by PwC is expected to be finalized soon, which will detail necessary measures to increase revenues and reduce expenditures. No changes to the current framework of state support are expected at this time, as the focus shifts toward long-term sustainability.
