AKEL marks 100th anniversary with international symposium in Cyprus
The Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) is marking its centenary with a series of events in Cyprus, including a commemorative gathering titled 'At the edge of the thread' at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre in Nicosia and an international symposium themed 'The Left in the modern world'. More than 30 political parties from the global Left have arrived in Cyprus to participate in these events and express solidarity with the party's ongoing efforts regarding the Cyprus problem.
During meetings at AKEL’s offices, General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou briefed international delegations on the current status of the island. He highlighted the ongoing challenges, specifically the Turkish occupation and the de facto division of the territory. Stefanou emphasized that the party's 100-year history, rooted in the 1926 founding of the Communist Party of Cyprus, remains tied to the struggle for social justice, labor rights, and the eventual reunification of the country.
Looking forward, Stefanou stated that the party continues to advocate for a common political agenda based on fundamental values. He urged the international Left to prove that there are alternatives to current global economic systems, rejecting the 'no alternative' logic imposed by dominant political and financial interests. The party views its historical legacy as a responsibility to future generations.
