APOEL celebrates 100th anniversary in Nicosia
APOEL, a major sports club in Nicosia, began celebrations this weekend to mark its 100th anniversary since its founding on November 8, 1926. The commemorative events included a 2.6-kilometer torch relay starting from the club’s original historic location and ending at its current headquarters, a Fan Day, and a photographic exhibition. The Nicosia Municipal Council approved the illumination of the Eleftherias Square and the old Town Hall in the club's blue and yellow colors, a decision that caused a political stir as AKEL councilors voted against the motion.
Simultaneously, the club is finalizing a deal with an investment group led by Savvas Liasis, which is expected to oversee the football department beginning in March 2027. Shareholders are set to review the agreement at an extraordinary general meeting on November 23. On the sporting front, APOEL prepares to host Aris at the GSP Stadium on Sunday. The team currently holds a perfect record at home, and the match is expected to be a near sell-out, with the club confirming only 500 tickets remaining in the North stand as of Saturday.
