Famagusta DISY municipal team proposes additions to the enclosed city return plan
The municipal team of the Democratic Rally (DISY) in Famagusta has submitted specific proposals to the Municipal Council regarding the potential return of the city's enclosed area, known as Varosha. These recommendations were disclosed on November 6, 2026, ahead of a scheduled meeting between a delegation from the Municipality and the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, set for November 7, 2026.
The DISY municipal team stated that their proposals are designed to enhance cooperation between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities in areas such as social interaction and entrepreneurship. By focusing on these sectors, the party aims to create a more robust framework that would allow the return of the enclosed area to serve as a catalyst for a comprehensive resolution to the Cyprus problem. The group emphasized that they are currently the only municipal faction to have submitted formal, detailed suggestions to the council plenary regarding this issue.
These developments occur within the ongoing context of international efforts to unlock the deadlock in the Cyprus negotiations. The forthcoming meeting with Maria Angela Holguin is expected to be a key opportunity for the local representatives to advocate for their vision of regional development and reconciliation through the proposed return initiative.
