Conflict of interest allegations arise at Limassol Municipality
A controversy has erupted within the Limassol Municipality following a meeting of the Cultural Committee last Tuesday. The head of the Cultural Services is accused of attempting to secure a 500-euro grant and the use of the Panos Solomonides Municipal Cultural Center for a non-profit organization he allegedly co-founded with his partner. Committee Chairman Michalis Michael publicly alleged that the official attempted to mislead committee members by failing to disclose his connection to the organization despite repeated inquiries regarding its ownership.
Following the discovery of the official's ties to the NGO, the incident sparked significant reactions from municipal councilors. While the official reportedly apologized to the committee, the matter has escalated into calls for a formal disciplinary investigation. Harris Nikolaou, head of the ELAM municipal group, has demanded a full investigation into the transparency of the grant process, emphasizing the need for accountability and clear answers for the public.
The situation remains under scrutiny, with requests for the municipality to clarify the official minutes of the meeting, the timing of when the conflict was disclosed, and whether the proposed grant was ultimately disbursed. Various council members are now pushing for the Audit Committee to intervene and perform a thorough check to ensure that all municipal procedures were followed correctly.
