Political maneuvering intensifies in Cyprus ahead of the 2028 presidential elections
Political instability and shifting alliances are dominating the discourse in Cyprus as the 2028 presidential election approaches. President Nikos Christodoulides is widely expected to seek reelection, and his potential candidacy has triggered a complex realignment among major parties. The Democratic Party (DIKO) currently views continued support for Christodoulides as its most stable path, despite internal reservations. Meanwhile, the Democratic Rally (DISY) is facing significant internal turmoil following the withdrawal of Annita Dimitriou’s candidacy and the entry of Averof Neofytou and Giorgos Pamborides into the race for the party nomination.
Attention has increasingly turned toward ELAM, the third-largest political force, which is reportedly in negotiations with the President regarding potential support from the first round of voting. ELAM leader Christos Christou, who is running unopposed for his party's leadership, has not ruled out an alliance provided that any partner adopts significant portions of his party's platform. Some sources suggest a deal may already be in progress, potentially involving ministerial positions for ELAM. Analysts anticipate a highly competitive race that will likely require a second-round runoff, as no single candidate is currently projected to secure an outright majority during the initial vote. DIKO is expected to finalize its formal position by the spring of 2027.
