Seven-year-old girl killed in Mexico amid police shooting investigation
A seven-year-old girl with American citizenship was killed in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, on October 29, 2026, during a security operation intended to remove roadblocks set up by armed groups. Authorities are currently investigating whether the child, who was inside a family vehicle, was fatally struck by gunfire originating from a police helicopter.
The circumstances of the event are disputed. Tamaulipas prosecutor Jesus Govea stated that officers claimed they were returning fire after being attacked at a roadblock. Conversely, the victim's mother reported that a helicopter pursued their vehicle, which carried her husband and five children. She alleges that her husband exited the car to signal their civilian status and presence of children before officers began shooting. The mother also sustained injuries during the incident.
Prosecutor Govea confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, although the officers involved remain free for the time being. The incident has prompted a broader inquiry into local police conduct and safety protocols during enforcement operations near the U.S. border.
