Planning application submitted for Faneromeni school restoration
Five and a half years after signing a memorandum of understanding, the Archbishopric of Cyprus has officially submitted a planning application to renovate the historic Faneromeni school building in Nicosia’s walled city. The project, which involves collaboration between the Archbishopric and the University of Cyprus, aims to restore the structure and convert the area behind the building, currently housing a basketball court, into a new public square.
As part of the initiative, the existing underground car park, which accommodates 123 vehicles, will also undergo significant upgrades. The site is intended to serve as a facility for the University of Cyprus, following a 2021 agreement that established a 33-year lease with the state at an annual rent of 150,000 euros. While previous progress was delayed due to rising costs and other setbacks, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos has expressed satisfaction with the current developments, highlighting the project's role in the city's broader strategic plan for academic and urban revitalization.
