Four injured after partial building collapse in Sao Paulo
A four-story commercial building partially collapsed in the Brás district of central São Paulo, Brazil, on the evening of Friday, November 6, 2026. The incident, which occurred at approximately 18:30 local time on Maria Joaquina street, prompted an immediate response from emergency services, including 51 firefighters and 17 vehicles. While initial media reports suggested dozens of casualties, authorities later confirmed that all 35 people present in the building at the time of the incident were successfully evacuated.
Four individuals sustained injuries during the collapse and were transported to local hospitals; their conditions are reported to be stable. While the building's facade remained largely intact, significant internal sections of the structure suffered damage. The state government initially indicated that about 20 people were trapped in a non-collapsed section of the building, but these individuals were among those rescued by the fire department.
This event has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding building safety and inspection standards in São Paulo, particularly following a separate structural failure in the city's East Zone less than two months ago, which resulted in six fatalities. As the rescue operation concluded without any reported deaths, the site is now expected to undergo a formal investigation to determine the structural failure's cause.
