Nicosia police heighten security for APOEL centenary celebrations and matches
Nicosia authorities have implemented an extensive security plan for the weekend of November 7-8, 2026, to accommodate celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the APOEL football club. The festivities begin on Saturday, November 7, with a "Fan Day" at the club premises followed by a torchlight procession at 6:00 p.m. originating from the former Hadjiioannou confectionery on Ledra Street. Authorities have warned of potential traffic disruptions and closures, particularly along Makariou Avenue, to ensure public safety.
The operation will continue on Sunday, November 8, at the GSP Stadium, where a celebratory fiesta and a football match against Aris Limassol are expected to draw 22,000 spectators. Police have confirmed that security measures will be reinforced throughout the event to manage large crowds before and after the game. While the police are also aware of parallel centenary events organized by the AKEL party in Nicosia, the primary operational focus remains on crowd control and traffic management for the APOEL festivities. Spectators are strongly advised to arrive early at the stadium and follow the specific instructions provided by on-site security personnel to prevent incidents.
