Greek authorities dismantle massive nightlife tax evasion network
On the night of Friday, November 7, 2026, Greek tax authorities (AADE) conducted a major operation in Thessaloniki, leading to 18 arrests. The investigation uncovered an extensive tax evasion network operating through nightlife venues in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki. The syndicate utilized over 4,200 Tax Identification Numbers (AFM) and 1,300 recruited 'straw men'—often vulnerable individuals approached near hospitals—to hide the real owners and bypass financial controls over the past three years.
The illicit activities resulted in approximately 203 million euros in accumulated debt, comprising 68 million euros in unpaid VAT and income tax, and 135 million euros in unpaid social security contributions (EFKA). The scheme involved business owners, three accountants, and one lawyer who orchestrated the establishment of shell companies. Authorities investigated over 700 business locations during this operation.
More than 60 tax auditors and seven prosecutors participated in the mission. The arrested individuals are currently being examined for their roles in the fraudulent scheme, which targeted high-risk sectors within the entertainment industry to facilitate systemic tax evasion. The investigation is ongoing as authorities review the involvement of prominent public figures and business owners implicated in the network.
