Cyprus education ministry proposes reforms to teacher appointment system
The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth of Cyprus has unveiled a proposal to reform the teacher appointment system, aiming to modernize recruitment while addressing concerns regarding existing staff. The reform seeks to balance the recognition of current educators' experience with the need for a meritocratic system for new applicants. The ministry clarified that the initiative is intended to ensure the smooth operation of public schools and rectify imbalances caused during the transition period following the 2015 legislation.
A central component of the government's proposal is the creation of a special registry system. According to the 2015 law, all appointments must be made exclusively from the list of qualified candidates starting September 1, 2027. Officials noted that many current teachers have either not participated in or failed the required exams, prompting the need for new regulations to prevent a disruption in school staffing.
Public consultation on the proposed changes is currently ongoing, allowing stakeholders to provide feedback. The ministry has expressed respect for trade union activities and differing opinions, while urging participants to engage responsibly as the bill moves toward parliamentary discussion.
