Athens hosts the 43rd Authentic Marathon with record participation
On November 8, 2026, the 43rd Athens Authentic Marathon commenced with the start of the classic 42.195-kilometer route from Marathon at 08:30. This year's event marks a record turnout, drawing approximately 85,000 runners from across the globe. While Rik News reports participants from 125 countries, the Cyprus Times cites 124 nations. Approximately 25,000 of these athletes are competing in the classic distance, which concludes at the Panathenaic Stadium.
To accommodate the event, extensive traffic regulations are in place throughout Athens. Streets including Marathonos Avenue, Mesogeion Avenue, Michalakopoulou, and Vassilissis Sofias are closed to vehicles to ensure the safety of participants as they follow the historic route. The marathon events, which began on Saturday, November 7, also featured a 10-kilometer race earlier on Sunday at 08:00.
The race serves as a significant sporting and historical event, maintaining its traditional trajectory from the site of the ancient Battle of Marathon to the heart of the Greek capital. Authorities have implemented temporary traffic diversions across the metropolitan area to manage the flow of runners and minimize disruptions during the competition.
