Progress on the Great Sea Interconnector project
On November 7, 2026, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed that authorities have issued the necessary research and installation permits for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), an electrical interconnection project linking Greece and Cyprus. A corresponding NAVTEX was also issued on Friday to facilitate the commencement of survey and cable-laying operations.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis emphasized the strategic importance of the GSI, noting that it is a project of European common interest involving French companies. He described the interconnector as a critical investment for regional energy security, stability, and cooperation. The Prime Minister reaffirmed that Greece and Cyprus hold sole authority for licensing these research activities, effectively addressing concerns regarding regional maritime tensions.
Beyond energy developments, Mitsotakis addressed the recent United States midterm elections, stating that Greek-American relations are built on stable foundations that transcend specific electoral cycles. He underscored that the bilateral partnership remains strong and consistent regardless of internal political shifts in the United States, suggesting that the strategic cooperation between Athens and Washington will continue unabated.
