APOEL football club celebrates 100th anniversary
On November 8, 2026, the Cypriot sports organization APOEL marks its centenary. Founded as POEL one hundred years ago by visionary figures including Diomidis Symeonidis and Georgios Poulias, the club was renamed APOEL two years later following the addition of the 'A' by Demosthenes Symeonidis. The club has since evolved from a small initiative into a pillar of Cypriot sports and society.
Throughout its history, APOEL has transitioned into a multi-sport organization, amassing dozens of championship and cup titles across various athletic disciplines. Beyond its competitive achievements, the organization is recognized for its historical impact on the island, transcending local sports rivalries to become an integral part of the nation's cultural fabric. The anniversary highlights the club's long-standing dedication to its initial ideals of community and athletic development.
The celebrations underscore a century of influence that has spanned generations of supporters in the capital and beyond. While its legacy is often viewed through the lens of sports trophies, the club's leadership and historical narratives emphasize its broader role in the social life of Cyprus.
