Authorities seize neglected dog in Farmakas following abuse allegations
Animal police in Nicosia have seized a dog in the village of Farmakas following public reports of mistreatment and dangerous living conditions. The intervention was prompted by viral video evidence of alleged physical abuse by the owner, alongside reports that the animal had been left to roam freely on local roads for approximately one year. This negligence led to a near-fatal traffic incident when a driver narrowly avoided plunging into a ravine while attempting to dodge the dog.
The Animal Party of Cyprus and the Movement of Ecologists-Citizens' Cooperation collaborated with the Palaichori Police Station to ensure the animal's safety. Following the seizure, the dog was transferred to volunteers who are currently providing temporary care and preparing the animal for future adoption. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the owner, covering both the animal welfare concerns and separate allegations regarding threats and physical altercations reported by residents.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officials coordinating with the Chief of Police and the Ministry of Justice to address the matter through institutional channels. The authorities have acknowledged the public concern surrounding the case and stated that all aspects of the reported abuse and dangerous conduct are being examined by the competent state services.
