AKEL general secretary outlines plan for 2028 political change
General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, addressed the 28th District Conference of AKEL in Larnaca on November 8, 2026, setting a central goal for progressive political change in the 2028 national elections. Stefanou argued that such a transition is necessary to halt what he described as the country's downward trajectory.
During his speech, Stefanou highlighted critical societal issues, including rising costs of living, the housing and energy crises, risks of energy supply shortages, and water management problems. He explicitly attributed these current social deadlocks to the policies implemented by the previous Anastasiades-DISY administrations and the current Christodoulides government.
Stefanou emphasized that AKEL, celebrating its centenary, remains a constructive force in Cypriot politics. He commended the Larnaca District Organization for its proactive role in submitting proposals for local development and for maintaining a high level of credibility among local stakeholders. The party intends to continue advocating for specific policy solutions as part of its broader strategy to regain executive power and reform the nation's direction.
