Minister of Labour reaffirms government support for mountainous communities
On November 8, 2026, Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Marinos Miousiouttas attended a ceremony celebrating the 30th anniversary of the twinning between Agios Ioannis Pitsilias and Agios Ioannis Kamenos in Crete. During the event, the Minister emphasized the government's ongoing commitment to revitalizing mountainous regions through targeted housing schemes and initiatives designed to foster entrepreneurship.
Minister Miousiouttas highlighted key policy reforms aimed at improving the welfare of residents in rural areas. Specifically, he noted that pension reforms are intended to ensure decent retirement benefits for those who have spent their lives working in agriculture and local crafts. Furthermore, he stated that the tax reforms implemented in January 2026 were designed to provide financial relief to middle-income workers and young families.
Addressing the needs of the younger generation, the Minister discussed the importance of education reform, stressing that regional schools, such as those in Agros, must provide quality of education comparable to urban schools. The government frames these economic and social interventions as essential measures to incentivize young people to remain in or return to their ancestral villages, underpinned by a policy of fiscal responsibility.
