Cyprus issues double weather warning as temperatures hit 44 degrees
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued concurrent yellow and orange weather warnings due to extreme heat affecting the region. A yellow warning for high minimum overnight temperatures (21:00 to 06:00) is in place, with mercury expected to remain at or above 28 degrees Celsius in the interior and 26 degrees on the coast. An orange warning for extreme maximum daytime temperatures is active from 12:00 to 17:00, with forecasts predicting highs reaching 43 to 44 degrees Celsius in the interior and 33 to 37 degrees in coastal and mountainous areas. Meteorological officer Andreas Chrysanthou confirmed these are the hottest days of the summer, with conditions expected to ease by the weekend. In response to the heat, the Department of Labour Inspection has mandated a temporary suspension of heavy outdoor and delivery work. Furthermore, humidity has caused sea fog, affecting operations at Larnaca Airport and road visibility in Limassol. Officials have urged vulnerable groups to take necessary precautions until the heatwave subsides.
