Cyprus issues orange heat warning and mandates work halts
The Cyprus Department of Labour Inspection has mandated a suspension of all outdoor heavy and medium labor, as well as delivery services using motorcycles or personal mobility devices. This measure is effective from 12:00 to 17:00 on Wednesday, July 21, 2026, coinciding with an orange weather warning issued by the Department of Meteorology. The restrictions apply to the interior of Cyprus at altitudes below 300 meters and locations more than 10 kilometers from the coast. Temperatures are forecast to reach a maximum of 43 degrees Celsius inland and 32 degrees Celsius in the mountains. Employers must ensure compliance with health and safety protocols for areas not under the ban, including the provision of shaded breaks and drinking water. Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology noted that seasonal low pressure is affecting the region, with temperatures expected to drop gradually starting Friday. A red alert for wildfire risks remains active across the island. Sources provided slightly varying forecasts for coastal temperatures, ranging from 33 to 38 degrees Celsius, while inland peaks remained consistent at 43 degrees Celsius.
