Cyprus issues orange weather warning for extreme heat
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued an orange weather warning for extreme high temperatures set to take effect on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. The alert is valid from 12:00 to 17:00, with inland temperatures expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius. Dr. Filippos Tymvios, director of the department, noted that temperatures in higher mountain areas are forecast to hit 32 degrees. While Tuesday experienced high temperatures, with Athalassa recording 38.6 degrees by midday, the upcoming days are expected to be significantly more challenging. The Department of Labour Inspection is intensifying inspections and advising employers to adjust work schedules, provide frequent breaks, and ensure access to cool environments to protect workers from heat stress. There is also a red alarm for fire danger across the region. Officials emphasized that while 43 degrees is high, it remains within the expected climatological range for July in Cyprus.
