Cyprus weather department issues yellow warning for thunderstorms
On Monday, July 6, the Cyprus Department of Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning for isolated heavy thunderstorms. The alert was effective from 12:00 to 18:00, primarily impacting mountainous regions, inland areas, and the northern parts of the island, including the Kyrenia district and the Karpas peninsula. Forecasters warned that rainfall intensity could locally exceed 35 millimeters per hour. Spokesperson Andreas Chrysanthou noted that while temperatures remained moderate—ranging from 30-32 degrees Celsius on the coast to 35-36 degrees inland—the weather remained unstable due to seasonal low pressure. Unstable conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday, with a gradual weakening of phenomena starting Thursday and Friday. Localized fog and increased humidity were reported during morning hours. Residents shared videos of the unusual summer weather on social media, reflecting on the rainfall in areas such as Xyliatos, Spilia, and Meniko.
