Extreme heatwave triggers orange warning and work suspensions in Cyprus
Cyprus is experiencing its hottest days of the summer, with temperatures in the interior reaching 43°C. Meteorologist Andreas Chrysanthou confirmed that an orange weather warning is in effect for Wednesday and Thursday, specifically between 12:00 and 17:00. Coastal areas are expected to see temperatures between 33°C and 36°C with high humidity. Due to these conditions, the Department of Labour Inspection has mandated a suspension of all heavy and moderate outdoor work, as well as delivery services using two-wheeled or personal mobility vehicles, between 12:00 and 16:00. This measure applies to inland areas at altitudes below 300 meters and more than 10 kilometers from the coast. Employers must ensure heat-stress protection for other workers, including frequent breaks and access to drinking water. A noticeable temperature drop of 4-5°C is forecasted for the upcoming weekend, with a brief respite starting Friday.
