Severe winter weather affects Cyprus and travel infrastructure
Heavy snowfall in the Troodos mountains has led to significant disruptions, with snow depths reaching 50 to 75 centimeters near Mount Olympus. On January 8, a tourist bus carrying 25 passengers became blocked on the Platres-Troodos road after sliding on ice, though no injuries were reported. Several roads in the region remain closed or restricted to vehicles with four-wheel drive or snow chains. Strong winds have also caused damage, including fallen trees in Pissouri and on the Asomatos-Limassol road, where a tree fell on a moving vehicle. The Department of Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning, citing potential hazards from rain, thunderstorms, and high winds across the island. Regional authorities have advised drivers to exercise caution, while schools in Lemythou, Platres, and Kyperounda were forced to cancel classes due to the conditions. The adverse weather, characterized by a cyclone, is expected to last until the weekend, with clearer skies forecast thereafter.
