Continuing hostilities in Lebanon despite ceasefire agreements
Despite a theoretically active ceasefire, military clashes continue between Israel and Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon. On May 20, 2026, Israeli airstrikes resulted in at least 19 deaths, including casualties in Deir Qanoun al-Nahr, where initial reports of 10 fatalities were later updated. The Israeli military stated it targeted suspicious armed individuals and issued evacuation orders for 12 villages, citing violations by Hezbollah. Damage was reported to medical facilities, including the Tebnine government hospital, while Hezbollah claimed attacks on Israeli air defense systems. Since the conflict's resumption on March 2, 2026, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reports over 3,089 fatalities, including 116 medical personnel and 211 children, with 9,273 wounded. Conversely, Israel reports 22 military deaths. Tensions remain high as both sides engage in ongoing aerial and ground skirmishes across the border region.
