Escalation in Lebanon continues despite theoretical ceasefire
Recent Israeli military strikes in Lebanon have resulted in at least 11 to 14 fatalities in the south and 3 in the Beirut periphery, despite a theoretical ceasefire in effect since April 17, 2026. The Israeli military has issued evacuation warnings for seven villages near Nabatieh and confirmed operations near the Litani River and the Bekaa Valley. While Lebanon’s Health Ministry reports significant civilian casualties, including rescuers and children, Israel states its strikes target Hezbollah and related militia infrastructure. US and Israeli military officials held talks at the Pentagon on Friday to discuss security, with further negotiations planned for June 2-3 in Washington. Hezbollah has retaliated by firing rockets into northern Israel, specifically near Kiryat Shmona. Conflicting reports describe the intensity of the conflict, with some sources citing as many as 34 deaths over a 48-hour period. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli forces are advancing in strategic sectors throughout the Lebanese front.
